Couple arrested after falling asleep in stolen car with baby

A man and woman from New York burglarized a home and fell asleep in a stolen car with a baby in the back seat, police said.

Amy Rice, 27, and William Swayze, 33, were jailed Monday on charges including theft, receiving stolen property and providing false identification to police. A judge set bond at $10,000 for Rice and $25,000 for Swayze, court records show.

Avalon police officers said they found a 2011 Buick Lucerne with a Pennsylvania license plate and New York registration stickers parked on California Avenue about 2:30 a.m. They said Swayze was asleep in the driver's seat, Rice was sleeping in the passenger seat and their 3-month-old son was strapped into a car seat.

The couple stole the car from Rice's grandmother, police said. Swayze told police he stole the license plate from Wright Automotive in Wexford and replaced the New York plate at Ross Park Mall several days earlier. The couple had jewelry, phone chargers and checkbooks that were reported stolen in a McCandless house burglary on Wednesday, police said.

Doctors at Children's Hospital in Lawrenceville released the infant to the custody of the Allegheny County Office of Children, Youth and Families after an evaluation.
